Gary Peters' men will take on the League One side on August 23rd or 24th after the draw, made early this morning, paired the two teams.
The tie, at Gay Meadow, will be a tough task for Mark McGhee's Brighton and represents a chance of an upset for the new-look Town.
Both sides successfully battled relegation last term and have not met for over three years.
On that occasion, Brighton were victorious as they dumped Town out of the FA cup with a 1-0 defeat.
Town boss Gary Peters was pleased with the draw. He told ShrewsWeb: "It's brilliant to get a Championship side and gives us a great chance with the tie being at home.
"I think it's a great draw and gives us a really hard test early on in the season," he added.
