"Everyone outside was surprised by what we achieved but, apart from the lads' ability, there was a great team spirit," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.
"But the first day I walked in here I was surprised how good the spirit is here too."
He added: "There are no cliques, no bad lads, everyone gets on really well."
Gornell left Accrington after agreeing terms with Shrewsbury over the summer but the two clubs have yet to agree a transfer fee.
"There's also a lot of competition up front and across the board but that's what you want. You want to push yourself every day, and that's what you'll have to do here," he continued.
"I want to fight for my place, work hard, put in 100%, be a bit of a nuisance in the box, and hopefully put the ball in the back of the net.
"I have no goal targets, I just want to do my best in every game."
Shrewsbury's start their League Two campaign at home to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, 6 August.
