"Although it's still there for us, we need to consolidate our play-off place and then look at the top three."
Shrewsbury have lost their last two games against Rochdale and Grimsby and sit in eighth place.
Town are on 55 points after 36 games, the same points tally as at the same stage last season and in the same position.
"We don't want it to be that close again this season. We need to take it one game at a time and the Aldershot game is really important," Coughlan added.
Shrewsbury travel to Aldershot where they will come up against former Town players Omer Riza and Ben Herd.
