Hereford United moved back to the top of the Nationwide Conference table with a revenge win over local rivals and fellow promotion-contenders Shrewsbury.

The Bulls, who were hammered 4-1 at Gay Meadow back in November, saw their third minute lead, courtesy of Rob Purdie, cancelled out within 60 seconds thanks to Lee Lawrence but weathered a first-half onslaught to win through Steve Guinan's second-half strike.

Hereford could hardly have made a better start with David Brown flicking Purdie through and the former Leicester City youngster steadied himself before firing past Scott Howie from 20 yards.

But the Shrews hit back immediately when Ryan Lowe got away on the right and his cross was confidently side-footed home by Lawrence.

After this, Shrewsbury had much the better of the play with Luke Rodgers a constant threat to the Hereford defence.

The best effort, however, came from Hereford's Guinan who saw a curling 25-yarder tipped over by Howie in first-half stoppage time.

The Bulls made a lively start to the second period and after Scott Willis had blazed over a gaping goal, Guinan raced on to a Jamie Pitman pass and hammered home at the second attempt after Howie had blocked the initial effort.

Howie saved well from Guinan just afterwards but although Hereford continued to hold sway, the Bulls were grateful to goalkeeper Matt Baker for two excellent saves.

The keeper raced out to block at the feet of Duane Darby and then, almost miraculously, grasped a shot from substitute Jody Banim at point-blank range when an equaliser looked inevitable.

"We had the chances to go away with at least a point," said Shrewsbury boss Jimmy Quinn.

"Now we've got to go to Barnet on Tuesday night and get something down there." "We played some good football in the second half after playing second fiddle for much of the first," said Bulls director of football Graham Turner.
