Crewe dominated their derby clash against Shrewsbury at the Greenhous Meadow and deserved more than a single goal margin over an inept Town who lost at home for the first time since May.
After a lifeless first half Crewe sparkled, Shaun Miller and Clayton Donaldson both went narrowly wide and three vital last-ditch headers from Mat Sadler prevented Alex taking the lead.
But Shrews could not hold out and the inevitable goal came with 67 minutes on the clock.
Matt Tootle crossed and Miller, unmarked, had time to side-foot home from eight yards for his 10th goal of the season.
Shrewsbury finally came to life in the last 10 minutes and Lee Bell cleared a header off the line from substitute Steve Leslie, but it was a case of too little too late for the Shropshire outfit.
