After watching Boston United climb into the play-off frame with a 2-0 victory over Southend United earlier in the week, Shrewsbury Town boss Gary Peters promised his side a tough encounter when the Lincolnshire outfit arrived at Gay Meadow.
He was proved right as the sides battled out an uncompromising, but at times entertaining goalless draw.
Shrewsbury, unbeaten in three of their last four games and victorious in both of their last two home games, will be disappointed at not collecting all three points after dominating for long spells of this hard fought encounter.
Yet despite holding sway for the most part, they created few clear-cut chances against a resilient visiting defence.
After 12 minutes Ryan Lowe forced a diving save from United keeper Nathan Abbey with a long-range effort, while five minutes later a Jake Sedgemore free-kick deflected off the Boston defensive wall only to bounce inches past the post.
On the half-hour mark, Kelvin Langmead headed goalward at the far post but Abbey was happy to scramble it away to safety.
Following the break Boston began to win a greater share of possession, but despite a succession of corners and hopeful crosses aimed toward the head of substitute Jason Lee, there was little to trouble Shrewsbury goalkeeper Scott Howie until the 84th minute.
Fourteen goal United striker Andy Kirk turned smartly in the box but Howie managed to palm his angled drive away for a corner.
As the final whistle approached Shrewsbury forced the visitors on to the defensive and it required another good stop from Abbey to keep out Sedgemore's 87th minute free-kick.
Right at the death Lowe almost won it for the Shrews but saw his effort hit the side netting.
