Shrewsbury Town crashed to their sixth home defeat of the season this afternoon as Wycombe Wanderers won by the only goal in a scrappy Gay Meadow encounter.
The visitors secured the points by virtue of a 27th minute penalty from Nathan Tyson which put more space between the Adams Park side and the League Two basement, but leaves Shrewsbury still languishing deep in relegation territory.
After some more encouraging displays at the turn of the year, Shrewsbury are now without a win in their last five games and are still are looking anxiously over their shoulders at the drop zone. They must, however, produce far more encouraging displays than this if they are indeed, to make headway up the table.
Despite the recall of striker Luke Rodgers after a three-match ban, following his red card at Yeovil in early January, Shrewsbury remained lacklustre in front of goal and although Rodgers went close in each half, they notched their successive game without a goal.
There was little to report from the opening stages, nothing in fact until Wanderers went ahead on 27 minutes. When Tyson cut into the Shrewsbury penalty area he was sent crashing by Shrews' skipper Darren Tinson – with Tyson getting to his feet to coolly slot the ensuing spot kick past Town 'keeper Scott Howie.
Shrewsbury responded with a close range effort from Rodgers that was well-blocked by Wycombe goalkeeper Frank Talia – who also had to be alert to tip over a Jamie Tolley free-kick.
After the break chances remained at a premium at both ends, but Wycombe went close to extending their lead eight minutes from time when a close range effort from substitute Johnny Dixon was well saved by Howie.
At the death Rodgers flashed a shot narrowly wide, but in truth Shrewsbury did not deserve anything from the game and will need an all-round improvement to stave off an immediate return to the Conference.
