Shrewsbury Town took a major step toward preserving their Football League status with a 4-2 victory over fellow strugglers Kidderminster Harriers in a topsy-turvy Gay Meadow encounter this afternoon.

The visitors raced into a two-goal lead after only 25 minutes against a distinctly out of sorts Shrewsbury, who went into the match after securing seven points from their last three games. But by half-time the home side had astonishingly established a 3-2 lead - and wrapped up the points with a fourth goal ten minutes after the break.

Chris Beardsley and Blair Sturrock gave Kidderminster a commanding 2-0 lead, but two goals from full-back and skipper Darren Moss drew Shrewsbury level and, on the stroke of half-time, they were headed into the lead by former Harriers loan man Kelvin Langmead.

In the 55th minute striker Luke Rodgers ended his personal goal drought to make it three wins and a draw from their last four games for the Shrews' - who can now look down on second bottom Kidderminster with a 13-point advantage from the relegation zone.

In the 13th minute Harriers went ahead when Beardsley netted from close range after a Tom Bennett shot had rebounded off the woodwork - and things got even better for them on 25 minutes when Sturrock beat Shrews' keeper Scott Howie with a neat turn and shot from just inside the box.

But after 29 minutes the home side were back in contention when Moss rose unchallenged to head home a Jamie Tolley corner.

The visitors' inability to defend set-pieces was also evident seven minutes before the break when another Tolley corner caused mayhem in the Kidderminster ranks, with Moss on hand to smash home Shrewsbury's equaliser from six yards, for his sixth goal of the campaign making him Town's top scorer.

Moss then turned provider, with his superb centre headed home powerfully by Langmead in first half-stoppage time - and when Rodgers nudged home his first goal since September in the 55th minute, the points were secured for Shrewsbury and mostly likely their Football League status as well.
